Health Is Our Priority
At Trufflemen, we believe that health is the cornerstone of a happy life for both dogs and their families. Our breeding program is guided by a commitment to producing healthy pups with diverse genetics, ensuring they have the best start in life. By prioritising low inbreeding and sourcing our dogs from reputable lines across the globe, we strive to maintain robust and well-balanced bloodlines. Every step we take reflects our passion for creating a brighter, healthier future for these incredible companions.

Lagotto Storage Disease (LSD)
•A rare neurodegenerative disorder that affects the central
nervous system, causing symptoms like movement difficulties,
tremors, or behavioral changes.
•Genetic test: Identifies whether a Lagotto is clear, a carrier, or
affected. Dogs which are clear or carriers wil be unaffected by the
disease.
•The first signs can be seen at the age of 4 months to 4 years
• Trait of inheritance: Autosomal Recessive

Juvenile Epilepsy (JE)
•A condition where puppies experience seizures starting at a
young age (from 5-9 weeks old and usualy resolves by 8-13 weeks
old.)
•Genetic test: Identifies whether a Lagotto is clear, a carrier, or
affected.
• JE is an autosomal-recessive condition. This means that a dog
must inherit two copies of an abnormal gene (one from its mother
and one from its father) before its health is affected. A dog that
inherits only one copy of the abnormal gene (from its mother or its
father) wil have no signs of the disease.

Neuroaxonal Dystrophy (NAD)
• Affected dogs exhibit various neurological deficits including
behavioural changes and unusual waking patterns.
• Symptoms start between 6 and 11 months of age.
•Genetic test: Identifies whether a Lagotto is clear, a carrier, or
affected. Dogs which are clear or carriers wil be unaffected by the
disease.
• Trait of inheritance: Autosomal Recessive

Furnishing (F)
• The improper coat/furnishings determines if a dog wil have
longer hair around the muzzle and eyebrows or lack of
furnishings (caled an improper coat)
• F/F - furnished (proper coat)
• F/f - furnished - proper coat, but should not be mated to
another F/ f (carrier) dog. If mated to a F/F (clear) dog, al
puppies wil be furnished (proper coat)
• f/f - lack of furnishing (improper coat)
•Trait of inheritance: Autosomal Recessive

Hyperuricosuria/ Urate stones (HUU/SLC)
• Hyperuricosuria is characterised by elevated levels of uric acid in
the urine. This diseases predisposes dogs to form stones in their
bladders or sometimes kidneys.
•Genetic test: Identifies whether a Lagotto is clear, a carrier, or
affected. Dogs which are clear or carriers wil be unaffected by the
disease.
•Trait of inheritance: Autosomal Recessive

prcd - PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy)
• This genetic disorder causes degeneration of retinal cels in the
eyes which can initialy lead to progressive night blindness and
secondly can cause complete blindness during the day.
• Prcd-PRA is inherited as an autosomal recessive trait. So there
are three conditions a dog can be: it can be clear (genotype N/
N or homozygous normal) meaning that it does not carry the
mutation and wil not develop the prcd-form of PRA. Since it
also cannot pass the mutation onto its offspring, it can be
mated to any other dog.
• A dog which has one copy of the PRCD gene with the mutation
and one copy without the mutation is caled a carrier or
heterozygous (genotype N/PRA); while it wil not be affected
by prcd-PRA, it can pass the mutation onto its offspring and
should therefore only be mated to clear dogs.
• Dogs that develop this form of PRA have two PRCD gene copies
with the mutation (genotype PRA/PRA or homozygous
affected); they wil always pass the mutated gene onto their
offspring and should also be mated only to clear dogs
